Georg Ritter - Discovering Tonga Ngoma Buntibe (excerpt)

from A Radio-Bridge across the Zambezi by radio continental drift

/

about

The track is an excerpt from many hours of audio documentation which Georg Ritter has digitalized only very recently. The recordings were made during a week of intercultural encounters “Discovering the art of Tonga Ngoma Buntibe music” as part of the Festival of Regions in Upper Austria in August 1997.
In a project by Georg Ritter and Gotthard Wagner, 30 people of the Tonga Simonga orchestra from Siachilaba, Zimbabwe went on a one-week mountain-expedition across the “Totes Gebirge” (dead mountains) accompanied by at least a hundred local people at any time; musical encounters were staged at a number of places on the way.
The excerpt included in the Radio-Bridge Compilation is from a place called “Appelhaus”; we hear sounds from a composition by Klaus Hollinetz, from the Simonga group and some Austrians joining in with traditional local singing (“Jodler”). [edited mix radio continental drift]
